Horror and depredation are denied to those who frequent the corner of 19th avenue and 37th street at the ragged edge of blessed Astoria, nearby the sonorous Steinway Factory. This vermillion vanguard waits, eternally, for the day when its clarion call will summon brigades of the capable, the skilled, and the well trained to snuff out conflagrations. Shine on, oh sentinel of the night watch, shine on.

It is disturbing to encounter a Firebox which adjures one to appeal to extra dimensional entities for succor and assistance, but this unit found on Astoria Blvd. South and the equivalent of 72nd street does just that. The Grand Central parkway to its back, this scarlet scion stands alongside St. Michael’s Cemetery.

Found at the great divide of 21st street, this sentinel has seen better days. Bent and warped by duty, it stands at one of the crossroads between the many Astorias, a signpost signaling the transition from the venerable past to the gauche present. Like all of its kind, it waits for the proverbial “now” rather than musing on “then” nor “someday.”

This municipal button has style, verve, and swagger. It towers precipitously on Crescent Street at the border of Astoria and Dutch Kills (the neighborhood, not the waterway, baby) awaiting the emergent and quite uncool news that trouble has arrived. Always at the ready to raise the roof or the alarum, this party loving firebox lets all that pass know help is just one shake of the lever away.

At the border of Woodside and Astoria, someone has been fancying up the Fireboxes. This specimen is found at 32nd avenue and 51st street, clad in gilt. Non regulation, at least someone other than me has begun to take notice of these municipal guardians, and decided to take ownership over the local street furniture.
