Found at the great divide of 21st street, this sentinel has seen better days. Bent and warped by duty, it stands at one of the crossroads between the many Astorias, a signpost signaling the transition from the venerable past to the gauche present. Like all of its kind, it waits for the proverbial “now” rather than musing on “then” nor “someday.”

This municipal button has style, verve, and swagger. It towers precipitously on Crescent Street at the border of Astoria and Dutch Kills (the neighborhood, not the waterway, baby) awaiting the emergent and quite uncool news that trouble has arrived. Always at the ready to raise the roof or the alarum, this party loving firebox lets all that pass know help is just one shake of the lever away.

At the border of Woodside and Astoria, someone has been fancying up the Fireboxes. This specimen is found at 32nd avenue and 51st street, clad in gilt. Non regulation, at least someone other than me has begun to take notice of these municipal guardians, and decided to take ownership over the local street furniture.

Up on the hill which is Old Astoria, an expanse of manses and luxurious homes, one is normally blown down by the sheer Victorian glory of a manifest architectural record. It is easy to miss the tireless firebox, ignominiously serving its purpose. This scarlet gendarme wears its corroded complexion proudly, and it is always watchful.

A provocatively placed municipal pimpernel is found at the angle between Sunnyside and Blissville, bathing in the corrosive miasma of automotive exhaust, blasted with coruscating radiation emanating from the burning thermonuclear eye of god itself- stands this steadfast guardian of the public good. Greenpoint Avenue is where the gradation from residential to industrial zones in this area of NYC takes place. From this point, passerby begin a descent from the high hills of Sunnyside to that troubled alluvial plain which surrounds the infamous Newtown Creek. A surprise in Western Queens, this firebox seems to be functioning.
