The last steps of a fun scuttle, as detailed in prior posts, saw your humble narrator shambling towards mass transit for his ride back to HQ. A swirling confusion of black fabrics wearing an orange ball cap, adorned with a camera, one picked his loathsome way towards the Monongahela River, where egress to that light rail chariot which would carry him back to the vault in which he dwells could be attained.
The humans were avoided, while moving through their infestation.

The Smithfield Street Bridge bore my bulk, and provided a path over the waters. Lament and regrets stained my thoughts, with past sleights and insults bubbling up and begging for renewed attention. I was in a mood, suddenly. Hatred and loathing. I think it’s because I scanned through one of several alerts on my phone, regarding the National position.
Everything political is busted, riddled with tumors, and the country on the whole seems to be metastasizing.
What can I do about it? Nothing. All I could and did do was continue on the way, after burning out a couple of hours worth of walking time. Bah!

I had hoped that another train might approach, and hung around on Smithfield Street Bridge for a few minutes, in vainglory. Just after I gave up and started heading across the river, however…

CSX appeared again, this time it was CSX #4766. I’ve noticed that freight trains seem to have been getting shorter in recent months, which is a ‘tell’ for how the macro/non Financial Industry side of the national economy is doing. Back in NYC, my barometer for ‘good or bad’ was always based on activity at Port Elizabeth Newark, rather than the booms and busts on Wall Street.
I asked Google’s AI for some detail on Port Elizabeth Newark:

On the other side of the river, one began picking his loathsome path towards the T light rail station a few blocks away. There’s a series of not exactly pedestrian friendly crossings one must negotiate to get to the relative safety of one of the waterfront trails, which then leads right to it.
I was keeping my eyes open for Day Vampires, Drug Enthusiasts, Pickup Trucks, Canada Gooses, Packs of Teenagers, and all the other perceived threats to my happiness which might light my amygdala afire.

Along this path, I noticed a right wing which had been dislocated from its owner. Odd.

Remains of a scuttle

After traipsing all over Pittsburgh during a longish scuttle, your humble narrator found himself heading into more familiar territory along the Monongahela River. Another not so friendly to pedestrians route was chosen, this one paralleling a series of high speed roads which operate in a trench. Pictured above, in the distance, is a traffic machine called the ‘Fort Pitt Bridge.’
Every GPS navigation package you can think of directs all the traffic in Pittsburgh going to and from the South Hills region onto the Fort Pitt Bridge and tunnel. There are two other perfectly acceptable highway paths you can take out of the central section of Pittsburgh towards the South Hills, which deposit you in more or less the same area on the other side of Mount Washington, I’d mention. Saying that, all of the ‘maps’ apps just love sending traffic to that very congested bridge and tunnel.
The Fort Pitt bridge offers what I consider to be one of the worst traffic interchanges in the entire country. It’s an ‘X,’ and the thousands of cars and trucks an hour which cross it and enter that tunnel having to negotiate a diagonal merge in a surprisingly short interval.
As I’ve intoned earlier, the driving culture of Pittsburgh is absolute brutality, so this ain’t pretty.

Moving easterly, the mirror face of the PPG Plaza building caught my eye as it threw reflection of the burning thermonuclear eye of God itself around. Disdain for the memory of architect Philip Johnson blossomed in my mind.
The plan for the rest of the day involved heading over to familiar territory at the Sly Fox Brewery where I’d hopefully get to see a train go by.

The Smithfield Street Bridge is a wonderful touchstone. The original bridge here was designed by John Roebling, and when it needed an upgrade they hired Gustav Lindenthal to do it. The bridge’s piers are original to the Roebling version, and the tension spring upper steel is Lindenthal’s.
Roebling, of course, designed and built the Brooklyn Bridge. Lindenthal is the mastermind behind the Queensboro Bridge. I quickened my stride.
I was heading for the brewery, after all, and was fairly thirsty by this point. I also needed to make ‘wee-wee.’

A pint of lager in hand, and after a trip to the loo, one settled in and waited for the signal chimes to start ringing at Sly Fox Brewery. It took maybe twenty minutes of waiting before CSX #4749 exploded into view.

It’s a 2003 vintage ‘EMD SD70MAC.’ A 16 cylinder engine in the locomotive produces some 4,000 HP of thrust, and it is said to offer a top speed of 70 mph.

It had been a nice, long walk. Lots of ups and downs, long distances, and mostly flat. What was desired was attained, which was to do some shooting while subjecting my gamey ankle to a longish walk.
As you’re reading this, remember that exactly one year ago today I was still confined to a wheelchair, and experiencing ghastly amounts of pain. The injury was more than just orthopedic, as lots of soft tissue damage had occurred too. Suffice to say that I learned about a new one during this experience – pressure blisters. Felt like a burn, but under the cast.
I just can’t stop remembering that right about now. Trauma, yo.
Adding in that I was all doped up on opioid pain killers, this situation wasn’t at all pretty. All I could do, besides watching a Turk soap opera about the Ottomans, was dream about recovery, and getting back to doing…

Vouchsafing against Diurnal Nosferatu’s

First off, there’s no way you’re going to get me to believe that the sub specie of Vampires hasn’t figured out a workaround for their sunlight problem here in the 21st century. Sunscreen? Hats? Something?
I figure that their ‘not crossing flowing water’ prohibition is a little harder for the armies of the night to conquer. Just in case a diurnal vampire has locked onto me, I’ll often take a quick hike across any available bridge as a vouchsafe. In this case, it was the Fort Duquesne bridge over the Allegheny River, here in Pittsburgh.

Fort Duquesne leads into Point State Park, and offers sweet views of its sister bridge – the Fort Pitt. The path off the bridge is wooded on both sides, so… excellent perching spots for day vampires to grab a snack off the path and chow down in the sylvan shadows. I stayed directly in the middle of the road, which I’ve actually never understood as being the metaphor for ‘safe.’
Worst place to be, middle of the road… that’s where the double yellow line is. Even worse are the other sides of the travel lane, at the extreme edges of the pavement, along the white lines.

The guy dressed up like a British soldier was likely a historical reenactment actor, but he could have been a ‘day vampire’ that has been dressing like that for hundreds of years. Anything is possible these days, as objective truth has become plastic, moldable, and pliant.
Hope that guy in the blue modern clothes made it home to his family.

I continued on, scuttle scuttle scuttle.
If I was a vampire, I think that I’d run for political office.
Mesmerize the crowd, tell them ‘those people over there whom you don’t like are taking something away from you, and giving it to somebody else far away that you like even less.’ I’d pontificate that garlic didn’t exist before 1957, that it’s an invasive specie sent to America by International Communists in order to traffick children in exchange for Fentanyl. Holy water would need to be banned by my edict, and then scheduled as a Class One controlled substance with the DEA.
I’d advocate for smog, and promise that the overcast conditions offer ‘freedom from sun burns and skin cancer’ for the span of my reign term.
My supporters would be called ‘freedom children, of the night,’ and they’d be required to wear red clothing so as to hide the leftovers from luncheon feedings, and I’d exclusively staff my inner office with loyal cohorts sent to me from amongst the Romani’s Rudar clan in Romania (or just reach out to Sunnyside in Queens, where the former ‘Maspeth Romani’ live).
Boxes of native soils from Brooklyn’s Canarsie would be stored around my district, and in Washington. You gotta sleep sometimes.

For crossing the Monongahela River, I avoided the obvious path of walking the Fort Pitt Bridge. Kind of out of the way for where I wanted to get to, and I was interested mainly in shaking off any potential day vampires who might be following me. ‘Day Vampire’ isn’t a metaphor for something ugly, by the way, I literally mean ‘day vampire.’
A counter narrative to my vampiric musings was playing through my headphones, incidentally, with Dragnet’s Joe Friday interrogating a bombing suspect, whose house hosted a bunch of Nazi stuff – flags, uniforms, etc. This script was also turned into a teleplay during the ‘Dragnet 67’ television version of the show, if it sounds familiar.
Friday gave one of his speeches about American values – free speech, freedom of conscience, the role which science and vaccines had played in freeing the WW2 generation and their descendants from avoidable disease and disfigurement. Friday put this speech forward as a rebuke to the suspect, who just wanted to tear the entire edifice down.
Joe Friday versus Vampires… now, that would have been something.

The Smithfield Street Bridge carried me across the Monongahela River, which made two flowing water barriers crossed. It did occur to me that Vampires probably use cell phones these days, and distinct populations of them might be communicating with each other remotely.
‘Hey, check out the old guy with the camera, he looks juicy. Lol’

As mentioned – one desired the usage of mass transit, for his return to HQ in Dormont, from downtown Pittsburgh. A quick walk across the Smithfield Street bridge, spanning the Monongahela River, was thereby enacted. It’s a Roebling Bridge, partially, and a Lindenthal Bridge too.
It had been a lovely but warm summer afternoon here in Pittsburgh. Middle 80’s in temperature, steady breeze, comfortable humidity. Made me feel all ‘wide angle.’

I’d remind that when this post is being written is quite chronologically disconnected from when you’re receiving it.
Somehow, I’ve managed to regain my ‘lead time’ here at Newtown Pentacle again, and this missive is being written during the last week of August. This sort of scenario is ideal for me, as it’s actually difficult and quite a lot of pressure to oblige publishing dates ‘on the fly.’ I like having the next post ‘in the can’ and especially so when there’s 10-15 posts ‘ready to go and scheduled.’
It was almost exactly a year ago, to the day, that I shattered my left ankle into three pieces during an accident at home. That kicked off a hospital stay and a round of surgery, and then a multi month interval of extreme pain and discomfort which I spent a good part of sitting in a wheelchair. Luckily, I’ve got a ‘deep bench’ of prior posts which I was able to pull out of backup as ‘archive’ postings to have ‘something’ show up here.
It feels fantastic to be firing on all cylinders again, and presenting new posts, just 12 months later.
It wasn’t altogether certain that this was something I’d still be able to do, which is something I haven’t really mentioned in public. This injury was a potential ‘crippler.’ It’s been a long and noisome trip getting back to trim. Thanks to all of you for sticking with me through this journey, it’s meant a lot.

One arrived on the southern or Monongahela shoreline of Pittsburgh’s ‘Golden Triangle’ and proceeded to lean into the last leg of this walk – getting to the First Avenue T Light Rail station where I’d catch my ride back to HQ. Had to crack out a few shots of the complex of ramps and highway lanes which line the shoreline here.
Love me them parabolas, I does.

This particular scuttle in Pittsburgh had a simple premise, which was to ‘keep moving.’ The current medical phase of my broken ankle related drama involves ‘stretching and strengthening,’ which basically boils down to a bunch of roadwork. If I was like everybody else, I’d find an athletic field and walk the track (there’s plenty of that sort of thing around these sports happy parts), but I’m an odd duck and easily bored so my interpretation of the Doctor’s mandate to ‘use it’ is instead to walk a different kind of track. Railroad tracks, that is.
After riding the T light rail into the metro core of Pittsburgh, from HQ in the Boro of Dormont, one navigated over to one of the trails which garland the three rivers’ waterfront. I was moving through the Monongahela River coast, on the south side of the so called ‘Golden Triangle,’ and that green painted area in the shots below and above indicates the pathway which this particular trail follows.
This is a fairly ‘complicated’ spot, with an interstate’s off ramps feeding into local traffic. You really want to use the walk/don’t walk buttons on the lamp posts when executing a crossing in this zone.

That’s the path, centered between those ‘do not enter’ signs. Given that I’m moving pretty slow these days, and running really isn’t an option, I waited for that red hand symbol on the light to turn into a white walking person icon before stepping off the curb.
It’s ironic, given how much Pittsburgh uses its waterfront for recreation and all that in modernity, that the city is stuck with a (literally) Robert Moses spawned highway design that was rammed in through its downtown and which completely blocked public access to the waterfronts back during the 1930’s and 40’s. Of course, there were steel mills and rail yards in this area until quite recently, and the waterfronts were engaged in commercial activity.
Modernity always presents a false picture of the past. It must have made sense at the time, but a lot of these decisions our grandparents made look awful from the perspective of the tyranny of now.

If anyone cared what I had anything to say about it, they’d deck over the highway and create new land for more productive usages than a high speed traffic trench, which is given to flooding during spring spurges of water on the rivers. I suggested this to several of the feudal lords back in Queens, regarding the Grand Central Parkway back in Astoria. Yeah, it would be expensive, but more so than exposing children to a residential exposure to all of that automotive exhaust? What about storm water? Decking a highway and installing a sponge park on the deck plates? Something? Anything? No? Let’s stay with the car canyon instead, and worry about affordable housing which nobody can afford.
At any rate, I wasn’t ’urban planning’ on this walk, I was just trying to maintain a steady walking pace and avoid having to sit down too often. That’s my deal at the moment, along with telling friends that I can’t walk terribly fast and that they should just move at their own pace, I’ll eventually catch up.

That’s where I executed a left, at the Smithfield Street Bridge over the Monongahela River. In the background, you can see one of the two inclines operating, the ‘yellow one’ as I refer to it. After crossing onto the bridge, I heard a train horn sounding off to the west and tried to get myself into a fortuitous spot to capture a shot of the thing.
As mentioned above, running isn’t really an option for me right now.

CSX #7215 was heading south east along the Pittsburgh Subdivision trackage. Like ornithology, it seems that everytime I try to say what kind of a train is I get it wrong, so in accordance with my ‘birds workaround,’ that’s a General Motors rocket sled which is powered by sixty angry kangaroos which are chained to extremely uncomfortable bicycles within. Cruel, but efficient, the rocket sled is.
I made an effort to find out what actual reality #7215 exists in, but for some reason the internet blew a gasket and all that Google wants to tell me about it involves the legal status of the CSX rail cops. I’ve learned a lot about the world of rail from watching ‘Hobo YouTube,’ and one of the bits of wisdom offered by the traveling folks involves total avoidance of the rail cops and at all costs. They’re not nice like regular cops.
Since you likely know what ‘regular’ on duty cops are like, with their complete lack of a sense of humor, imagine that cranked up to level 10. Rail cops.

Luckily, a T light rail appeared over the active CSX tracks. I like it whenever I can capture multiple trains in a single shot, especially so when they’re both moving.
