Queens Plaza, in today’s post.

Terrifying is how I usually describe the rate of real estate development around Queens Plaza, but I do have to admit that all the high visibility construction materials, which are orange, that currently surround the transit hub really do add a bit of color to an otherwise dour locale. Ten years ago, the only colors you associated with Queens Plaza were soot green, soot gray, and just plain soot. There were also little piles of blood here and there, but… y’know.

I’m sure the residential towers in the shot above, rising on the site of a former chemical factory, will end up being encased in the same sort of pale blue glass that all the other recent arrivals sport, but it would be great if we could permanently adopt some colors from the other side of the color spectrum around these parts – just to liven things up and provide some contrast with the increasingly occluded sky.

As part of the “affordable housing” bonanza being led by the Big Little Mayor these days, I’ve been brainstorming for ways that I can get in on the feeding frenzy. Having no desire to alienate parkland or build a luxury tower on a former playground in a NYCHA housing project, this has forced me to get creative.

Sleeper cars on the subways! That’s my idea. Imagine tooling around the City in your own personal car, like some sort of modern day Artemis Gordon and James West. Sleeper cars on the Subway would defeat “NIMBY” sentiments for homeless shelters as well, as the shelter wouldn’t reside in any one neighborhood for long (except in the case of the Franklin Avenue Shuttle).

The NIMBY thing, as thrown around by the Real Estate shit flies and their acolytes, bugs me.

The way it’s used by these oligarchs is contextually meant to throw a recidivist cast on local activists who oppose the wholesale destruction of their communities by external forces seeking to squeeze every bit of bank they can from functioning neighborhoods. The subtext is that the people who presently reside in Queens are atavist or racist, or anti “progress,” and must be done away with.

Since this “progress” is the seeming goal of real estate oligarchs like Donald J. Trump – replacing working class residents with higher end tenants while claiming their developments will address historical wrongs – as the new populations can be exploited in deeper ways than the old ones due to the size of their wallets – the NIMBY accusation against opponents plays quite well in the press who want to please their principal advertising customers. If “NIMBY” doesn’t work, however, then the real estate lobby moves on to “racist.” Tell me, are rich people now an ethnic bloc? If race figures into luxury real estate development, what are the demographics of the moneyed class who are the anticipated tenants of these towers, and that of those who are displaced by them? I also point out to our overwhelmingly single party political system that these new residents won’t necessarily be members of the Democratic Party, which will kind of mess up your franchise and that iron grip on political power you currently enjoy.

The higher end tenants moving into these towers will not have a back yard to complain about anyway, as they’ll be living on top of a former chemical factory in Queens Plaza. Does Janovic or Home Depot offer interior design supplies in shades of “soot”?

Authoritarian and totalitarian societies force conformity upon all under their thrall which can be seen in the soul crushingly bland, uniform architecture in which its subjects are forced to live. This is the better stuff they build compared with those horrid worker’s barracks we witnessed in New Lots near the Gateway Mall.

The nail that sticks up gets hammered down and when most of the local economy is the hammer of real estate, everything looks like a nail. Everything is then hammered down to the lowest common denominator of hopelessly mediocre drek. In this should be included culture and the arts.
This is the inevitable trajectory of the Managerial State.

“The way it’s used by these oligarchs is contextually meant to throw a recidivist cast on local activists who oppose the wholesale destruction of their communities by external forces seeking to squeeze every bit of bank they can from functioning neighborhoods. The subtext is that the people who presently reside in Queens are atavist or racist, or anti “progress,” and must be done away with.”

A primary feature of the Managerial State is the idea that modern politics and social issues are too complex for the hoi polli to understand or make cogent decisions about. Therefore all decisions must be made by state technocrats and politicians- for the good of the prole masses. If the proles do not like it, tough shit, we know better so sit down and shut up.

The Maspeth protests are viewed as servile insurrection, proles trying to tell their betters what to do which is absolutely unacceptable and something the elites greatly fear.

The political establishment’s contempt for their own, well, subjects now, not citizens, verges on depraved indifference to the well-being and safety of their subjects.

The “racist” and “anti-progress” terms are utterly meaningless and are nothing more than the jejune shaming language progressives use to silence opposition. Much of their rhetoric is nothing more than projection, and pointing and shrieking at opposition is the only weapon to gain compliance in the prog’s arsenal. The most potent response to these is to take away their only weapon with “I don’t care”.

To any other reader of this comment: You’re being told you are too stupid to make your own decisions or have your own opinions by people who do not give a rat’s ass what happens to you. Are you OK with this?

“I also point out to our overwhelmingly single party political system that these new residents won’t necessarily be members of the Democratic Party, which will kind of mess up your franchise and that iron grip on political power you currently enjoy.”

This is incorrect. These people are sold on the status symbol of being an elite member of Bloomberg’s shining “Luxury Product City”. These people live for nothing else except the purchase and consumption of status symbols as they are wholly unable to produce anything themselves. They hate and fear the middle and working classes as potential competitors and The Ruling Party further guarantees protection of their wealth and status through volumes of regulations, licenses and compliance costs. This prevents proles from engaging in free enterprise and thus moving up in economic class and tearing the established elite down from their thrones. This was and is the entire goal of the progressive movement.
Besides, how many of your readers, friends and acquaintances would prefer to suffer torture and death rather than support the Democratic Party and all its policies?

{As an aside, do you now understand why I hold in high regard people like John D., Carnegie, et al, who rose up from poverty and created much wealth and technological progress. Not only for themselves but the poorer people who were then able to afford things which bettered their standard of living. Do you now see why I always say the derogatory sneer of “Robber Barons” (which is more aptly applied to crony capitalists then and now) was a way of demonizing them as to discourage others from following their path.
    Who are the real Robber Barons after all?}

No, the “tower People” will fight to the death to maintain the Ruling Party status quo.

Now then sir, please stop posting essays that stir me to think and then write these long winded responses. I’d rather return to my ghostly existence where these matters do not concern me.

    • I never use the pejorative term “Robber Baron”. I prefer the honorific terminology of “Captain of Industry” or “Industrial Statesman”.
