crush and engulf
Late again, sorry. Here’s why.

Since the weather broke, your humble narrator has lost nary a minute to the Newtown Pentacle, and much in the way of shoe rubber has been expended in the last few days. Saturday, I walked the so called entire “upper creek” (the area of Newtown Creek found between Maspeth Creek and English Kills, which borders Ridgewood and Bushwick). Sunday, I was in Greenpoint all day, but sadly missed getting a shot of that baby seal which turned up at the Newtown Creek Nature Walk.

Monday (yesterday), I conducted a tour of the lower Creek for a group of film students from Pratt University, and this afternoon, I’m hoping to find some time to pop over to Hell Gate in the hope of capturing some interesting images of maritime traffic.

It is magnificent, this throwing off of the shackles of ice and snow, and returning to the streets. Conversely, a humble narrator’s physique has largely transformed into a quivering jelly over this long winter, and every muscle in my legs and back are liberally painted with lactic acids. Hopefully, within a few weeks, I’ll be back in fighting condition and enjoy a fineness of fettle.

Packer trucks are what the garbage guys call vehicles like the familiar DSNY conveyances. Municipal vehicles whose ubiquity and constant presence renders them nearly invisible, they hide in plain sight, and most of us only notice them when they don’t show up or if we are instead stuck behind them in traffic. An archive shot, I acquired this one nearby Queens Blvd. at the border of Woodside.

A topic that isn’t terribly popular to discuss at cocktail parties pertains to the Department of Sanitation of New York, as it reminds the “swells” that there’s always a bill to pay. Perhaps my fascinations with the DEP and the wastewater systems of the megalopolis have just adjusted my perception, but the flow of refuse in, around, and out of the City just might be one of the most important strategic issues of our day. I had intended this short post to focus in on the actual truck pictured above, and discuss statistical information about horsepower, load, and fuel consumption- however- I can find absolutely nothing on the subject publicly available.
Odd. DSNY is all about numbers.
There is a dearth of propaganda about an experiment with hybrid electric diesel models assigned to actual routes, but it will take a long time to replace all the big white trucks.

2,196 Collection Trucks
DSNY Collection and E-Z Pak trucks collect 12,000 tons (2,000 pounds = 1 ton) of refuse and recycling each day. Collection trucks service curbside refuse and recycling along with basket collection and can hold up to 12 tons of refuse each. EZ-Pak trucks collect refuse that is stored in containers.
