Given the clime, here in Pittsburgh, there hasn’t been a lot of opportunity to get out and walk about. I’m still quite limited in the ambulatory department, post broken ankle, but I’m not just cleared for physical activity – the Docs are actually encouraging it now.
Saying that, no way are you going to see me trying to navigate ice and snow if I don’t have to at the moment. Luckily, Our Lady of the Pentacle’s ambitions caused one to find himself in the parking lot of a local thrift store which offers a view of something I’ve been intrigued by for a while – these abandoned homes nearby the Route 51/Saw Mill Run corridor nearby the Mount Oliver section.
I’ve written about these houses on Timberland Avenue before, and was lucky enough to receive an assist on the research from long time reader ‘Lucienve.’

Saw Mill Run itself is a somewhat natural waterway which mainly seems to function as a drainage ditch for the business and residential structures along its route. A primary arterial road, which takes its colloquial name from the waterway, hosts a variety of businesses – many of which are automotive in nature. Car lots, mechanics, that sort of thing.
Heading in a generally eastwards direction away from Pittsburgh, Route 51 ultimately gets you to the nearby community of Uniontown. I’ve driven that way a few times, when heading towards Maryland and the very interesting Appalachian city of Cumberland.

Back at HQ, it’s been pretty much snowing all week. We got several bands of ‘lake effect’ snow recently. It’s been a real hassle with the ankle and everything, I’d mention. The weather forecast seems to be a bit more on my side in this last week of 2024, so cross your fingers…

Recent endeavor found a humble narrator again staring into the cataract of Saw Mill Run, here in Pittsburgh. I’ve mentioned this spot before, and the waterway several times. Occasion had carried me back here – there’s a nearby thrift store which Our Lady of the Pentacle enjoys browsing through – and since ‘shopping’ is an activity which I detest…
When I do find myself in need of a manufactured item that can only be acquired in the ‘brick and mortar’ retail sphere, I approach the purchase in the manner of a military mission. Success is judged on how quickly it was accomplished, and how few people I needed to talk to. A humble narrator does not browse.

Those two abandoned houses are still there, seemingly untouched by the interval of roughly a year, since I had described their situation in April of last year – a post (link above) which I was allowed to include a wonderful bit of detective work as offered by one of my Flickr followers, named Lucien Van Elsen.
Our Lady was inside the busy thrift store for a while, purchasing items to be offered as gifts for family and friends she’d be seeing on an upcoming trip to her ancestral nest in England. It seems a gently used Steelers jersey is a prized item amongst the British fans of ‘American Football’ who dwell in Albion, like my brother in law.

We’ve experienced nearly record levels of rainfall here in the Pittsburgh area this year, and the run itself was swollen and moving swiftly. Based on smell, Saw Mill Run receives residential sewer runoff. After all those years on Newtown Creek, I can distinguish between residential and business sewage based on its scent alone.

Seldom Seen Greenway, addendum

Yesterday, I described the ‘Seldom Seen Greenway’ trail in Pittsburgh’s Beechview section, and mentioned that there was a second level to the place found above the brick lined trestle pictured above. This second level, as I discovered, hosts active rail tracks. I found that out while doing a bit of research on the place after getting back to HQ from the location.
That’s why I found myself back there a day or two later. I had to take a look at what, where, why, how – all that.

It wasn’t that difficult getting all the way up here, but it was a bit complicated getting back down the steep incline while managing my camera and pack. These are freight tracks, ones which are somewhat infrequently used – once or twice a day, I reckon. I’ve seen video of trains moving along the tracks here, which display the polished steel rails you’d associate with active RR tracks. A Wheeling and Lake Erie train set was moving through in the video I saw, but I couldn’t tell you if this is exclusively their right of way or not.
I hung around up there for about a half hour with my fingers crossed, but then I got bored and slid back down the steep hill to the greenway below. I’ll be back, next time with a sandwich and thermos bottle of water, and just wait it out. Trains are a lot like fishing.

I shot a few shots down below, with nothing terribly special to show for the effort, frankly. The nearby Saw Mill Run Boulevard, named for this waterway, is a primary arterial roadway that connects to the Liberty Tunnel on one side and the West End Bridge (amongst other destinations in either direction) on the other. It also connects to two other primary arterials called Banksville Road and West Liberty Avenue. These three roadways have secondary and tertiary high volume roads that branch off and lead out into the residential neighborhoods of the South Hills in this part of Pittsburgh.

Seldom Seen Greenway

About a 15 minute drive from HQ in Pittsburgh’s Borough of Dormont is the neighboring South Hills community of Beechview. Along a very busy arterial roadway called Saw Mill Run Boulevard is found a 3/4 of a mile long trail called ‘Seldom Seen Greenway.’ A recent visit was paid.
There’s a rail trestle at the entrance, and the pathway in from the parking area follows the flowing waters of the Saw Mill Run waterway. Based on olfactory observation, Saw Mill Run receives a bit of wastewater flow from the surrounding residential areas.

The rail trestle at the entrance has a finely wrought brick tunnel, which is something that kind of jumps out at you. A lot of time and effort went into the masonry, and given that what you’d normally encounter in a spot like this would be unadorned concrete, it makes me wonder why the expense was undertaken to create this sort of fascia.
The entire path is graded. Pavement is present. It seems there’s a group who looks after the place, but this is an ‘official’ public place and recreational path.

There’s opportunity to get down to the water from the path, although in many places that opportunity is either quite steep or obstacles like patches of Poison Ivy occlude one’s intentions to do so. The sloping hillsides leading down to Saw Mill Run are fully wooded.
The waterway itself is largely shallow and only a few inches deep, but there’s a couple of spots where the bottom drops away to a few feet and the water flows quickly across the gaps. My guess is that if you were a teenager in Beechview, this is one of the places where you would go to escape parental or adult oversight and smoke the devil’s cabbage.

Every time I try to say what kind of a bird a bird is, I just get it wrong so instead I make up names for the Avians. Thusly, your looking at a Nine Fingered Radish Hen in the shot above.
I actually do know that’s a duck, so you don’t need to tell me that. What kind of a duck? Ask an Audubon, Bro.

Above the trestle at the entrance there are two other levels of rail infrastructure. After returning to HQ and poking around on the internet, I discovered that the top level tracks are still active. On this first visit though, I didn’t climb up there to investigate.
I’m actually quite pleased to have found this place, so close to HQ. This will be a great spot to take short walks when time is short. There’s also a dedicated ‘Seldom Seen’ parking lot, so double win. As you’ll discover at the end of this post, I’m now seriously in need of this sort of place.

I’m going to require a portfolio of spots like this one, after all. Near the house, separated from traffic and distractions. There’s lots of training underway here in Dormont. What kind of training, you ask?
Meet the newest member of the family: Moe the Dog. He’s 5 months old, and whereas he only weighs about 35 pounds, he’s nevertheless a ton of fun. That’s my new Pennsyldoggie.

Timberland Avenue

Between 1970 and 1990, Pittsburgh lost 158,000 manufacturing jobs. That resulted in its population decline, which saw some 289,000 people move to greener pastures during the same interval. If you’re a wonk, and want to read graphs and a well thought out report on the demographic collapse of this area, check out this 2003 Carnegie Mellon Heinz School report on the situation. Observationally, and according to everything I’ve read on the subject, Pittsburgh has a lot of abandoned houses.
According to this article at pittsburghquarterly.com, Allegheny County alone has over 51,000 abandoned or blighted homes. Many solutions have been tried, including the Community Land Bank concept which my friends back in Queens and Brooklyn were very enthusiastic about. This is how that sort of scheme worked out here, unfortunately.
Combating “Blight” is a major budgetary spend for the municipal entities hereabouts. There’s all sorts of tales that are told about why somebody would abandon a property, but there are parts of Pittsburgh where every third or fourth house is abandoned. When you start getting out into the more rural areas, it’s common to see homes being overgrown by and reclaimed by the forests.

Something very similar occurred in the 1970’s version of NYC I grew up in, when former industrial properties were being fenced off or abandoned, and the dormitory tenements which provided these businesses with staff began turning into crap holes and eventually got abandoned or burned out. Remember the South Bronx of the late 1970’s, both the South and North of Brooklyn, as well as the East River coast of Queens during the 1980’s. This is before the Gentrification Industrial Complex got started during the third term of Mayor Ed Koch (it all started over in Hells Kitchen and the Upper West Side, then the contagion spread to Brooklyn and Queens).
I always had the Millennials and Zennials who had recently arrived in NYC tell me that I had seen too many movies when I would describe packs of wild dogs roaming about the empty brick lots of 1980’s Williamsburg. I was there.

These abandoned houses are divided from the surrounding area by Saw Mill Run, a tiny waterway discussed in yesterday’s post and which is pictured above and connected to other roads by a now closed bridge. The water looks fairly impure to me, and there’s lots of dumping that takes place along its banks – observationally.
As always, these photos always appear at Flickr before they get the write up here, and a Flickr commenter by the name of Lucien Van Elsen left me this great bit of research on what happened to these particular houses. As it turns out, they’re quite recently abandoned.

“So, I wondered what the history was here… how did they get from someone’s house to this state? Going backwards…
Pittsburgh wanted to close the Timberland avenue bridge, since it only served these few houses. They were going to take it via eminent domain in 2020, but instead paid $70k for them, and left them in this abandoned state instead of knocking them down.
