a chaotic whirl

It is a difficult proposition, shooting into what is essentially a giant fish tank, which is out doors and in the presence of a crowd. I experimented with extending the lens hood on my lens (one of those flexible silicone rubber sorts) and placing it flush on the glass. I left the lens at its widest angle and lowest f stop and shot at a ludicrous 3200 iso speed. I think it’s kind of neat with the vignetting forming the circular pattern.
immundane and ethereal

The inch thick glass precluded transmission of sound, more for the protection of the arctic and subarctic specimens within I would imagine, but I’m sure the call of this penguin would be “tekelele”. What else might be housed in Manhattan’s collection of nature’s wonders, whose very existence might shock the citizenry?
paths and arbours

Blind blogging I call it. This week and a good piece of next, I’ll be in the middle of moving Newtown Pentacle HQ from one part of Astoria to another. Hence, my internet connection and ability to work will be on a temporary hiatus, and I’m taking the liberty of setting up a schedule of short posts which display interesting photos that don’t have any real place in the normal narrative.
Accordingly, if you leave a comment and I seem to be ignoring it, I’m not- I just can’t quite get to it right now. Normal Pentacle activity will resume the first week of October, and I’ve got something pretty cool in the works for then.
lucky shot

Luckily, there seems to be some effort underway to paint the Brooklyn Bridge. A sheathing of reflective metal scaffolding recently heralded a fortuitous confluence of solar azimuth and camera vantage point as evidenced above.
Luck, pure luck. Check out the larger sizes at flickr by clicking the image (as always).
2010 Great North River Tugboat Race
– photos by Mitch Waxman
Sunday the 5th of September saw the Hudson River boiling with Tugboats, and your humble narrator was onboard the stout Launch 5 (a former NYPD patrol boat- aka the Patrolman Walburger- whose sturdy crew generously hosted me) shooting photos. Check out the flickr slideshow above (which can also be accessed here) and the race results below.
The Race results as released by the Working Harbor Committee:
