Jesus Christ!
Your humble narrator was scuttling along Pittsburgh’s Boulevard of the Allies, and walking the borders of Duquesne University, which is very, extremely, Catholic. It’s a nice and neatly kept property, Duquesne, and they host a crazy landscape and pedestrian feature up there, in addition to many sculptural representations of the tenets of their faith.

A steel foot bridge overflies the Boulevard of the Allies – a high speed road – and then offers a truly intimidating set of City Steps to descend down to the Monongahela Flood plain below. Known as the ‘Bluff Steps,’ this structure is between 10 and 12 stories in height (depending on how you define building stories) and their course travels downwards along 179 sets of rises and runs.
I did not walk them on this day, as I’ve done so in the past, and there was another ‘experience’ which I was desirous of having instead.

Saying all that, no reason not to get a few shots while I was there.
This shot looks downwards, towards Second Avenue and the South 10th street bridge spanning the Monongahela River below.
The link above leads to a series of posts which were largely captured from the south side of the river, illustrating just how intimidating a landform this bluff is.

That’s where Boulevard of the Allies intersects with I-376 right in the distance, a combination of high speed roads which does a brilliant job of restricting the citizenry from accessing the river. To be fair, there used to be enormous steel mills all along the waterway in this section, and a mammoth railroad yard on the other side.
Jones & Laughlin steel, I’m told, or just J&L as it was known locally. The Yinzer pronunciation sounds sort of like ‘Jay ‘n EL.’

Overjoyed, I was, when I saw a truck carrying trucks go by on the highway below. Ideally, smaller trucks would be secured in the beds of the ones on this carrier. Trucks carrying trucks which carry trucks. Yay!
I had decided not to walk down those steps, not out of PTSD inspired fear, but for curiosity’s sake instead.

One scuttled around the edges of Duquesne University. Heading westwards, more or less. The university is piled up against another urban highway corridor on that side too. More on that subsequently.

Three from Pittsburgh

That’s a ‘T’ light rail train set operating at street grade, along Arlington Avenue in Pittsburgh, and sitting at a red light. The transit service is currently rerouted from its normal efficiency to accommodate a construction project rehabilitating a transit only tunnel punched through Mount Washington which it normally uses.
Your humble narrator was car based on this particular day, due to high atmospheric temperatures and a desire to see a lot of things all at once. Luckily, I’ve developed a fairly decent knowledge of how to get around hereabouts in the last three years. Zippy.

A quick drive over to Etna found me sitting under a bridge to take advantage of the offered shade. I was trying for a railroad trifecta, but Norfolk Southern wasn’t playing ball. I had other stuff to do, and my ‘me time’ interval was coming to an end.
All of the posts you’ve seen this week were captured rapid fire on that particularly hot and sultry morning.

On my way back to where the car was parked, this truck carrying smaller trucks caught my eye. I asked the trucker if I could grab a couple of shots and he waved me on saying ‘I couldn’t give a flip.’

One was scuttling through the Carridor, or Northern Blvd. as the rest of the world calls it, recently. Nearby the thoroughfare’s intersection with Newtown Road, this semi appeared, and it was a truck carrying a series of other trucks.

I was reminded of some nature documentary I had once seen that showed a Momma turtle allowing her babies to hang onto her carapace as she moved through the water, with the offspring forming a conga line behind her.

Here, you see a truck carrying a smaller truck which has another even smaller truck on it. If only there was a pickup with a bicycle in its bed upon the smaller truck…
